A report released last year by the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics has called for a sustained effort to reduce maternal mortality rates in Ghana. The government has displayed valiant dedication in reducing maternal and infant deaths, but independent United Nations expert Anand Grover encouraged the country to redouble its commitment to these goals:
In order to ensure that current gains related to the right to health are sustained, the government must develop a strategy to address possible deficits in future funding.
The maternal mortality rate in Ghana remains high even among developing nations, making these issues particularly urgent. The article goes on to report that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon found global rates of maternal mortality “unacceptable.”
