Save the Date: Houston Masquerade

After a resounding success of last year’s gala, Save A Mother-Houston Chapter is organizing its 3rd Annual Fundraiser. Masquerade Masti, on May 13, 2011 at Chateau Crystale, will enable business and community leaders and individual philanthropists to learn about SAM’s accomplishments and the impact of their donations, and promises to be a night of fun, food and entertainment.

Those who cannot attend but are would like to donate to the cause can donate securely on the group’s Web site at www.saveamother.org or send a check to the registered 501(c)(3) organization in Houston, TX at : Nat Murthy, 633 Lake Shore drive, Sugarland, TX 77478.

Note From Save A Mother to Haiti Victims

As the unimaginable devastation of one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises in decades unfolds before us, one is reminded of the deadly tsunami that killed more than 200,000 people across Asia only five years ago. Aid agencies from across the world and common people came together in the aftermath of the tsunami tragedy to pull together a massive, hugely successful relief effort that rebuilt and refashioned devastated homes, villages, cities, and economies. That aid work was largely possible because of the generous donations of people like you and I.

I encourage all our readers to help the Haitian people by supporting one of the humanitarian aid organizations doing outstanding relief work in Haiti right now, such as Doctors Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity, and others. Let us come together in this New Year and together make a difference.

LSNP Group & Save A Mother – Annual Charity Walk by Ashvini Bommakanty

A small San Diego based puja group sponsored Save A Mother for their recent Annual Fundraising 5k Walk, which took place at Torrey Pines State Reserve. This group was started in 2001 by four ladies, Uma Bommakanty, Annapurna Yenamandra, Prabha Pyati, and Anasuya Peesapati. They meet on a monthly basis to recite the lalitha sahasranam to goddess Lalita Devi, a Divine mother who is also symbolized as feminine power, Shakti.

Their organization is named LSNP (Lalita Sahasra Nama Pathanam). This year they introduced an annual charity walk in addition to their monthly pujas as a way to encourage team building, well being, and support for charity organizations. They chose to contribute to Save A Mother for their very first walk because it’s an organization that values the life of a mother.

INFANT AND MATERNAL MORTALITY – THE PROBLEM AND SOLUTIONS: Two million babies and mothers die worldwide each year from childbirth complications. This number far exceeds child deaths from malaria and HIV/AIDS!! Read about the latest findings from a huge research study conducted by Save the Children, the Gates Foundation, and the Johns Hopkins University, with investigators from a dozen countries – contributed by Shiban Ganju

Save-A-Mother’s 2nd Annual Fundraiser a Success!

Save-A-Mother held its second annual fundraiser on May 2nd, 2009 at the Mars Gallery in Chicago. The event included live music performances, a comedy showcase, and food and drinks. Thank you to all those who came out to support our cause and to the event sponsors and volunteers.

100% of the proceeds from the event went towards training village health activists to reduce maternal mortality and improve health in rural Uttar Pradesh, in India.

Solution: In Africa and South Asia pregnancy and childbirth complications are still the leading cause of death for women. 85 percent of maternal mortality occurs in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
